As part of its efforts to contain contain the spread of the coronavirus amongst homeless people, the City of Cape Town started rounding up homeless on the City's streets and started moving them to a sports ground in Strandfontein, roughly 30 kilometres from the CBD.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councillor for the area, Elton Jansen, says he is unhappy with the decision by the City to move the homeless to the sports grounds without consulting him or the residents.

The City of Cape Town is controlled by the Democratic Alliance, who also controls the Western Cape. The Western Cape is the only province in South Africa not controlled by the ruling African National Congress, the party of Nelson Mandela, and President Cyril Ramaphosa.
