Cape Town Law Enforcement officers assaulted monitors from the South African Human Rights Commission when they entered the Strandfontein homeless camp, to consult with people in the camp who were asking for assistance during engagements to decommission the site.

The site has been at the centre of controversy since media were barred from the site and a report by the South African Human Rights Commission and Doctors Without Borders called for the site to be closed. The site was set up by the City of Cape Town to house homeless people during the national coronavirus lockdown.

Tauriq Jenkins, a commissioner with the Human Rights Commission, explained how the homeless people protected the commissioners from being assaulted by the law enforcement officers.
