Customs officials seized gold worth 224,657 dollars from one aircraft and several passengers arriving at Chennai International Airport.

In footage of one of the incidents, shot at the airport in southern India on 7 October, custom officials are seen recovering gold hidden in sealed packets from under a seat in an aircraft.

The incident was just one of four incidents in which customs officials reportedly seized gold weighing a total of 3.15kg (7 pounds), valued at 224,657 dollars (Rs 1.64 crore).

In addition to the gold found under the seat, the precious metal was also found hidden in the socks of a passenger on the same flight.

The same day four passengers who arrived from Dubai were also found to be smuggling gold in their luggage.

And in another incident on Tuesday night, five passengers were found to be carrying gold in their underwear.

All the passengers and flights had arrived in Chennai from Dubai.

Custom officials seized gold worth Rs 1.64 crore (USD 224657) from an aircraft and passengers in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place in Chennai International Airport of Chennai on October 7.

The video shows the custom officials recovering gold hidden in a sealed packet from under a seat in the aircraft.

According to the reports, four separate cases were registered where custom officials seized gold weighing a total of 3.15 kg (7 lbs).

The yellow metal was recovered from Air India Express Flight IX 1644 under a seat concealed in a packet. On examination, two bundles of gold paste and two gold bars weighing 116.5 grams each, 928 grams of gold valued at Rs. 48.27 lakhs (USD 66137) were found.

In another case 169 grams of gold was recovered from a passenger concealed in socks who arrived by the same flight. Total 1.1 kgs (2.2 lbs) gold valued at Rs. 57 lakhs (USD 78098) was recovered. 

Same day four passengers who arrived from Dubai by Fly Dubai Flight FZ 8517 were intercepted at exit. On their personal search 11 bundles of gold paste were recovered. Total 1.2 Kg (2.6 lbs) gold valued at Rs. 61.5 lakhs (USD 83579) was recovered.

Another incident on Tuesday night, five passengers who arrived by Air India Express Flight IX 1644 were intercepted at exit. On their personal search eight bundles of gold paste were recovered from innerwear. Total 858 gram gold valued at Rs. 45.5 lakhs (USD 61656) was recovered. 

Total 3.15 Kgs (6.9 lbs) gold of 24 karat purity valued at Rs. 1.64 crores (USD 224657)was recovered and seized under Customs Act.

All the passengers and flights that were involved in the gold smuggling were from flight Dubai to Chennai.
