A newborn baby boy was found alive crying next to a rubbish bin after allegedly being left there to die by his cruel mother.

The infant was wrapped in a pink blanket when a street food vendor heard him in Samut Sakhon province, Thailand, on Monday morning, April 11.

Police checked CCTV and saw a woman calmly walking with what appeared to be a bundle of clothes - but actually had the tot covered inside.

They re-traced her footsteps and arrested Burmese mother Tin Tin Hla, 29, on suspicion of child cruelty by abandoning her son.

Tin allegedly confessed that she gave birth several hours before but she was concerned about money so she 'left the baby next to the bin'.

She said she believed that the rags would be bundled up by street cleaners and carried away in a garbage truck.

Tin told local police with the help of an interpreter: ‘My boyfriend left me. I gave birth alone in my small room. I didn't know what else to do. I don’t have money.’

The baby has been taken to a hospital for a health assessment where medics found he was unharmed and suffered no physical injuries from being left outside.

Officers also searched Tin's apartment for signs of drugs or alcohol and to collect further evidence.

She has since been remanded in custody to face charges following a psychological assessment. The baby will be taken care of by nurses until social workers can place him into a home.

Police Colonel Sereethakan Chanduang said: ‘We wanted to find the mother as soon as possible so we immediately went to the area to check CCTV and interview the residents.

'It did not take long to find the mother and she was immediately arrested. To leave her child next to the bins, we believe that she intended for him to die and be taken away.

'It's lucky that he was making noise in the morning and someone was able to help. The consequences could have been worse.

'The mother will be prosecuted in accordance with the law for what she has confessed to.'
