Rescuers hammered through a pavement to save a pet dog that was trapped underneath.

Footage shows the team pounding through the concrete to create an opening through which they could pull the pooch to safety in Makati City in Manila, the Philippines, on February 2.

Pet owner Rosemarie Lobos said she combed through a neighbourhood to look for her pooch named Panda, who had gone missing that morning until a water delivery man familiar with the dog told them he saw her stuck in a canal under the concrete sidewalk on their street.

The worried pet owner immediately called local authorities to help the hapless canine who brought a hammer as
terrified Panda could be heard crying from the narrow hole.

The relieved fur mum said: 'My neighbours told me Panda fell into a nearby river, so he swam towards the canal and found a place where the light reached so people could see him. Luckily, the residents on our street all know Panda so they informed us immediately.

'He is very smart. We're thankful we found him right away.'
