Operation to remove Thames 'bomb ship' masts postponed in Kent, UK
A delicate operation to remove three masts from Thames 'bomb ship' SS Richard Montgomery off the Kent, UK coast has been postponed until next year (2023).
The WW2 American Liberty cargo ship sank 1.5 miles off Sheerness in 1944 with 1400 tonnes of explosives still onboard.
The UK Gov planned to remove the masts this summer to prevent them collapsing on the bombs below.
However, a letter published yesterday (June 28) by MP Gordon Henderson confirmed the removal operation is to be delayed until Spring 2023, to allow more time for planning and preparation.
Some work will still be undertaken this summer to remove 'potential unexploded ordinance which has been identified around the wreck' according to the published letter received from Robert Courts MP, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security.
Footage shows the shipwreck's three masts at low tide filmed from Sheerness seafront yesterday evening (June 28), followed by footage of the wreck site filmed from a boat at mid-tide on May 30.
