Problem removing masts of UK's most dangerous shipwreck off Kent

Department for Transport (DfT) have announced they have run into a problem with the planned removal of a Thames shipwreck's masts today (June 23).

The UK's most dangerous shipwreck - SS Richard Montgomery, sank at the mouth of the River Thames in 1944 with 1400 tonnes of explosives onboard - 1.5 miles north of Sheerness, Kent.

DfT originally planned to cut-0ff the ship's three masts off last year (2021), because of the risk posed if they were to fall onto the wreck. The work was then re-scheduled for Spring 2023,

However, detailed surveys of the surrounding seabed have now revealed 18 objects that would prevent a jack-up platform - needed for the mast removal operation - from being safely installed next to the wreck.

Therefore, DfT have announced the masts will not be cut off this year, and they need more time to consider the best way to proceed with the project.

Footage shows a yacht and freight ferry Botnia Seaways passing the wreck site today (June 23), along with footage filmed from a boat (on June 15).
