Kind villagers rescued a stray dog with its head stuck inside a plastic jar.

Residents noticed the brown female pooch running around while wearing the container like a helmet for two days in Nakhon Nayok province, Thailand on July 1.

Concerned for the poor animal, they called the village council chief who organised a rescue operation to free it.

Footage shows the group of men approaching the dog while it was roaming in the middle of a rice paddy.

However, the stray dashed away upon seeing the net one rescuer was holding. They continued chasing it around, but it proved too elusive, and the operation was postponed until the next morning.

Village chief Sawian Tongthip said: 'The dog must have been really tired and hungry, that's why the villagers managed to catch it the next day.'

The pursuit was easier the second time around since the stray was exhausted from the previous chase. The dog ran towards a pond, but was quickly cornered by the group riding their motorbikes.

They pulled the plastic jar from its head, after which it sprinted away to freedom.
