A trio of male buffaloes clashed head on simultaneously as they tried to impress a female nearby
A trio of male buffaloes clashed head-to-head at the same time trying to attract a female’s attention.
Morne du Plessis was travelling through Kruger National Park, South Africa, when he came across the aggressive males squaring up to each other.
Exciting footage shows the three rivals hurtle skull first at each other, coming together with an audible thud as their horns rattled with the impact.
After breaking off into pairs, the males continued to charge at each other but all in vain as their female target left unimpressed.
Morne said: “While it is not uncommon to see buffalo behave like this, what made this sighting different is that the old bull went for so many of the younger buffalo.
“This is why cape buffalo are some of the most dangerous animals on the planet.
“The old buffalo was asserting his dominance over the other males and putting up a display for a buffalo cow that was standing in the waterhole.
“The elder would have weighed between 900kg and 1000kg, while the younger ones would be between 700kg and 800kg.
“The clash lasted about seven minutes before they all dispersed. Despite their efforts, the cow was not interested in all the bravado.”
