Brave farmer crawls on all fours to rescue one day old calf from hole
A brave farmer had to dig into a hole to save the life of a newborn calf that became stuck overnight.
P.G. Van Tonder was patrolling his Tuinplaas, South Africa farm, checking on his cows when a new mum appeared to be walking nervously around a specific area.
Dramatic footage - which has been viewed more than 175,000 times - shows P.G. crawl on to all fours and go headfirst down a dusty tunnel having worked out she was looking for her baby.
After a minute of rustling in the sand, the 23-year-old managed to pull the calf out by its legs, quickly clean it and return it to its grateful mother.
P.G. said: “One of the cows had a baby the previous night and the following morning she searched everywhere for the calf.
“I saw that she was searching in the specific area so I joined in and as I walked into the field I heard the calve calling for its mother.
“That was when I noticed that the calve was in the hole and I realised I had to save it.
“Calves can get stuck in these holes easily because they are still young and their legs aren’t strong enough to get out. When they fall in they get tired when they try to get out.
“I had a very good feeling when I saved him because I knew he would survive as soon as he drink some milk.”
