Sonar survey of Thames shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery off Kent, UK
Vessel Northern Wind was seen undertaking a sonar survey of River Thames shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery this afternoon (August 23).
WW2 American cargo ship SS Richard Montgomery sank in the Thames, 1.5 miles north of Sheerness, Kent back in 1944, with 1400 tons of explosives onboard, making it the UK's most dangerous shipwreck and posing a hazard to the nation ever since.
Clinton Marine Survey AB are undertaking a detailed sonar survey of the shipwreck on behalf of the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency 'Receiver of Wrecks' department this week to assess the shipwreck's condition.
Previously announced Government plans to the remove the wreck's three masts this year have had to be delayed due to technical problems.
