Taal Volcano spewed thick plumes of gas over the weekend as sulfur dioxide emissions hit a record high this year.

Footage shows clouds of volcanic gas and steam rising from the volcano in Batangas province on October 16.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said a record 9,762 tonnes per day of sulfur dioxide was measured on October 12.

The agency said on October 16 that there were no volcanic earthquakes recorded, and 4878 tonnes per day of sulfur dioxide was last recorded on October 14.

Residents were advised to wear face masks when going outside to lessen exposure to harmful volcanic gases.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
