This is the shocking moment an out-of-control pick-up truck smashed through a family's garden gate when the driver started in the wrong gear.

CCTV footage shows the black Toyota Hilux Revo parked in front of houses while the driver was entering it in Saenrak 4 village in Chonburi, Thailand, on November 2.

The vehicle screeched across the street and crashed through a concrete fence into a yard. It destroyed the gate and barreled out onto the road again before the driver finally regained control.

Homeowner Wittaya Maprakhon, 34, said he was out buying food at the time when his daughter called to tell him that their neighbour's truck had torn through their property.

The unnamed neighbour said he had forgotten to shift the automatic gear transmission properly, causing the truck to accelerate when he started the engine.

Wittaya said: 'I contacted the construction contractor and they told me the damage was around 60,000 THB (1,690 USD) for the fence itself, excluding the damaged trees. My neighbour said he would take full responsibility for the damages.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
