A protective ring of 'Danger' buoys surrounding a Kent, UK shipwreck have unusually been removed today (November 11).

Twelve bright orange buoys marked with the word 'Danger' - which warn mariners not to go near the notorious SS Richard Montgomery wreck just over a mile off Sheerness, Kent - were seen being removed by vessel Medway Hunter.

It's believed to be the first time the warning buoys - which mark out a no-entry exclusion zone around the wreck - have been removed in their entirety since the 1970s. The Montgomery is a designated dangerous wreck under section 2 of the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 and due to its risk is monitored by radar 24 hours a day.

The temporary removal of the buoys is to assist with specialised survey work which has been commissioned. This includes a multibeam sonar survey, gradiometer survey and chirp survey - which are being undertaken by vessel Thames Guardian (also shown in the footage).
