Helicopters race to rescue tourists amid avalanches in Chinese scenic area
Two helicopters raced to rescue trapped tourists amid avalanches in a scenic area in northwest China.
The video was filmed in Altai Mountains region in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in January 3.
The Altai Mountains region has been hit by relentless snowstorms, causing multiple avalanches and blocking roads to popular destinations like Kanas, Hemu, and Baihaba. Stranded travelers face difficulties due to the snow-covered routes.
On January 13th, the Kanas Scenic Area Management Committee announced complimentary accommodations and meals for tourists stranded within the scenic area. Responding to the crisis, on January 14th, the Xinjiang Military Region dispatched two helicopters for emergency rescue operations in the Altai region.
According to Mr. Zhang, a tourist in Hemu village, "Today, helicopters arrived with supplies and evacuated tourists with injuries or urgent situations. The snow in Hemu village has reached over two metres deep, and the only access road, a winding mountain route spanning around a hundred kilometres, has witnessed multiple avalanches."
Ongoing heavy snowfall in the Altai Mountains has triggered frequent avalanches in recent days. With substantial snow accumulation and prolonged snowfall, at least 13 avalanches have occurred on routes leading to Kanas and Hemu, blocking passage. As of January 14th, stranded tourists have endured a four-day ordeal.
