In Oct 2020, Raj Kumar who was a painter by profession, decided to cross the train tracks of Nangloi on his bicycle. On his venture to cross the tracks, Mr. Raj Kumar lost his control over his bicycle and took a fall & run over by the train losing both his upper limbs.

In Feb 2023, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi became the first hospital in north India to receive permission to perform hand transplant.

On 19th January, the surgical process, a first of its kind in Delhi, was nothing short of extraordinary. He is now released from hospital on March 7th

While Kumar was expecting to live the rest of his days without any hands, the passing of Meena Mehta meant he had a second chance at life.
Mehta, a former administrative head of a prominent South Delhi school, was declared brain-dead by doctors and, before her death, she'd opted to be an organ donor.
Her family also expressed their wishes to donate her organs following her death and, with Kumar already on the waiting list, doctors went on to perform the life-changing surgery.
His surgery is the first of its kind in north India.

A team of surgeons collaborated tirelessly to execute this intricate procedure, delicately reattaching various components, including bones, arteries, veins, tendons, muscles, nerves, and skin. Precision and expertise were the key, ensuring the seamless integration of the transplanted hands into Raj Kumar's body.

The team of Doctors who undertook this surgery were lead Dr Mahesh Mangal.
