Clean up operations are continuing in Indonesia after debris and damage remains following cold lava floods triggered by an erupting Mount Marapi.

A week has transpired since the catastrophic cold lava flood triggered by Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, leaving behind a trail of devastation in the affected villages. Debris from ravaged structures and mangled remnants of vehicles still litter the disaster zone, stark reminders of the flood's destructive force.

Footage filmed at Simpang Bukik Canduang, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province on Saturday (May 18) vividly portrays the immense power of the cold lava flood, which wreaked havoc upon numerous buildings. Some structures succumbed entirely, reduced to rubble.

The vast expanse ravaged by the cold lava flood is further evident in drone footage recorded at the disaster site. Data compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia indicates that 450 hectares of agricultural land and 1,600 plant specimens fell victim to the cold lava flood, locally referred to as "Galodo".

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) released updated casualty figures as of Saturday, May 18, 2024. The total number of fatalities resulting from Mount Marapi's cold lava flood has reached 61 individuals.

"This figure was ascertained following comprehensive by-name-by-address (BNBA) data collection conducted by Pusdalops BNPB in collaboration with provincial and municipal posts in the affected regions, utilizing Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) data gathered by the West Sumatra Police. The data collection process revealed instances of data duplication involving victims from different affected areas," elaborated Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Communication Center for Disaster Management, in an official statement disseminated to the media on Saturday evening.

The cold lava flood from Mount Marapi transpired on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Search and rescue operations persist in the quest to locate 14 individuals reported missing, with SAR teams tirelessly scouring the affected areas.
