This is the moment a motorbike and car plunged into hidden potholes on a flooded road, despite being guided by traffic police.

The footage, filmed on the Bukittinggi - Padang route via Malalak Balingka, in West Sumatra province, last weekend, shows a motorbike following behind a truck as it plunges into a pothole, causing the passenger to be thrown from their seat.

In a separate clip, a car is seen veering off the road and into a pothole after misinterpreting the instructions of a traffic officer.

Aiptu Yandi, the Head of Traffic Enforcement at Bukittinggi City Police Resort, said the low-class road had become the main alternative route for large vehicles that were not designed for it, causing extensive damage to the road surface.

"Traffic was diverted here after the main route was damaged by flash floods on May 11," Aiptu Yandi added. "The route through the Lembah Anai is scheduled to reopen on July 21, 2024."

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of motorists using the alternative route, particularly during the rainy season when potholes are more difficult to see.

Police have urged drivers to proceed with caution and to follow the instructions of traffic officers carefully.
