A hero fireman abseiled into a filthy canal to rescue a pet dog.

The fire department team were called swiftly when a resident's pooch plunged from a bridge in Manila, the Philippines, on November 5.

Footage shows one of the team members attached to a truck's tower ladder while being lowered to extract the canine.

He did not immediately grab the dog that took refuge in a pile of trash. The officer tried to befriend it first so it would not panic.

When the pooch was calm, he took it with him, and colleagues lifted them back onto the bridge.

Resident Pat said: 'The firemen arrived quickly with just one call. We were grateful for their service.

The pet dog was unhurt and returned to its owner. It was taken home and cleaned.
