A teenager trapped in a 50ft deep mineshaft was rescued in California.

The boy, 16, was retrieved from a vertical mine shaft after falling 30 ft when his rope snapped during an exploration with his friends in Placer County on February 10.

The victim's friends called the Placer County Fire Department and Auburn City Fire Department for help.

The rescue team set up a complex rope system and conducted air monitoring before venturing down to the scene.

Footage shows one of the officials attaching a harness to the boy before hoisting him to safety.

The team recalled that they had ventured 180 ft into the mountain through the mine before rappelling down the drop using ropes. They became stranded on a ledge when one of the ropes they were using broke.

The teenager was reportedly transported to a local trauma centre for treatment.

Fortunately, he did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.

Authorities warn that abandoned mines pose serious risks, and exploring unstable terrain is dangerous.
