TAMPA, Fla. — A toddler’s life was saved thanks to the fast and composed actions of Tampa police officers who responded to a choking emergency, the department said.

Body camera footage released by the Tampa Police Department shows officers working quickly to assist the child, who appeared to be choking on a piece of tomato. Officers calmly encouraged the toddler to open his mouth and breathe, eventually helping him dislodge the obstruction.

“He’s making noise. He’s breathing… There it is,” an officer is heard saying in the video after the food was expelled.

Officials used the incident to remind the public that choking can happen silently and without warning. If someone cannot speak, cough or breathe, immediate help is needed. Call 911 and learn to recognize the signs of choking.
