BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota Highway Patrol urged drivers to slow down and use extreme caution Thursday as icy conditions contributed to numerous crashes across the state.

Troopers said roads may appear clear but are coated with black ice, leading to collisions that began Wednesday night and continued into the morning. Officials thanked motorists who have reduced speeds, driven for conditions or stayed home when possible, noting it helps keep first responders safe.

Drivers approaching crash scenes are reminded to slow early, avoid braking abruptly near responders, move over for emergency vehicles and maintain control of their vehicles regardless of weather. The Highway Patrol said it is working to clear crashes as quickly as possible but needs the public’s cooperation to ensure safety.
