MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. — Several Mount Vernon police officers are being praised for rescuing residents trapped inside a burning home early Sunday morning.

Around 2:20 a.m. Aug. 31, officers responded to a house fire on North Macquesten Parkway and saw a woman and child calling for help from a second-floor window. Sgt. Rizzo and PO Mason initially entered but were forced back by heavy smoke and flames.

Determined to reach the family, Sgt. Rizzo and PO Hunter-Carney climbed the porch, pulling a young child to safety. Working together with POs Marcano, Belliard and Mason, the officers lifted each other onto the porch roof and helped evacuate four additional residents.

All occupants were safely removed, with housing assistance provided afterward. Officials thanked the Mount Vernon Fire Department and OEM for their response.
