BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota Highway Patrol warned drivers that improving road conditions may be temporary as melting snow and ice are expected to refreeze overnight, creating hazardous travel for the evening and morning commute.

Troopers said they have already responded to numerous slide-offs, stalled vehicles, and crashes across the state. Dash camera footage even captured one trooper slipping on the ice — an incident the agency noted he walked away from without injury.

Officials stressed that despite clearer roads in the afternoon, conditions will worsen again as temperatures drop. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra space, plan ahead and assume roadways will be icy.

“If you must travel, drive like you know it’s going to be icy,” the agency said in its advisory.
