REDMOND, Wash. — Redmond police responding to a shoplifting call at a Target store on Dec. 27 encountered a situation that extended beyond a routine theft investigation, highlighting the balance between enforcement and compassion, according to the Redmond Police Department.

Officers detained a man outside the store who was found with stolen clothing and an outstanding warrant for theft. During the encounter, the man told officers he was homeless, living in cold conditions, and suffering from a painful hand infection. He explained that antibiotics prescribed for the infection had been stolen and that he had attempted to take a jacket and snow pants to stay warm.

Redmond Fire Department medics responded to assess the man’s injury and transported him to a hospital for treatment. Anticipating that he would likely be released back into the cold, officers used a BlueBridge Alliance assistance card to purchase a jacket and snow pants for him before he was transported.

Police emphasized that theft remains illegal and the case will proceed through the court system. However, the department said the response reflects the importance of addressing immediate human needs while still holding individuals accountable under the law.
