A horror bus crash killed two passengers and injured 10 others in western Thailand.

The yellow coach spun out of control when the driver Thotsaporn, 51, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel in Prachuap Khiri Khan, on June 4.

It crashed into a power pole before ploughing through the railing of the median strip.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report at 4:30 am. They found the bus lying on its side with the windscreen and windows shattered.

Rescue workers evacuated the passengers through an emergency hatch on the bus roof.

Authorities said there were 29 people on board. Two men were killed while 10 suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. The unharmed passengers were provided a replacement bus by the transport company.

The driver, Thotsaporn claimed he had dozed off after taking over driving duties as the reserve driver.

He said: 'After reaching the rest stop at Hua Hin, I took over as the second driver. But some time during the journey, I dozed off, causing the bus to swerve out of control. I hit an electric pole and the guardrail before falling into the median strip.'

A spokesman for the Khlong Wan Police Station said: 'We have collected evidence and will be taking legal action against the driver.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
