Phoenix, United States - June 23, 2025 06/23/2025 12:50 am GMT-0700 MESA, Ariz. – According to preliminary information gathered at the scene, Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers responded to reports of a wrong-way driver on the Red Mountain Loop 202 near Country Club Road shortly before 1 a.m. Monday. The vehicle was reportedly driving eastbound in the westbound lanes at a high rate of speed. As troopers responded to the area, they were notified of a head-on crash that occurred just west of the Stapley Drive overpass involving a vehicle that matched the description of the wrong-way vehicle. DPS troopers arrived and located two vehicles that were heavily damaged and were beginning to catch fire. One of the vehicles was on its roof. Mesa Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, extinguished the fire, and tended to the drivers of both vehicles. Both drivers were transported to a local area hospital in extremely critical condition. DPS closed westbound L-202 and forced all traffic to exit at McDowell Road as they investigated the crash.
