Close Call Highlights Dangers of Ignoring Highway Move Over Laws
LONE TREE, Colo. — A close call on Interstate 25 near Ridgegate Parkway underscored the dangers law enforcement officers face while working on the roadside and the importance of “Move Over” laws, officials said.
According to the City of Lone Tree Government, Corporal Holton was helping remove a full-sized backyard grill that had fallen into the roadway when a driver attempted to maneuver around his patrol car and stopped suddenly. A semi-truck following behind was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the vehicle, just feet from where the officer was standing. Holton had to run to avoid being struck.
He was not injured, but the city emphasized that the incident could have been prevented. Colorado law requires drivers to move over a lane or slow down when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles with lights flashing.
