On 8 August, in a restaurant in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, a woman choked on three tapioca pearls while drinking bubble tea. She began to experience increasing difficulty breathing, and her face turned blue.

As she was on the verge of suffocating, neither the waitstaff nor nearby diners reacted in time. At that moment, 11-year-old primary school pupil Hu Zihan, who was dining with her parents, stepped forward and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre. She wrapped her arms around the woman’s waist and delivered precisely timed abdominal thrusts, continuing rhythmically for 30 seconds. Her “textbook” rescue brought the woman back from the brink of danger.

Hu Zihan is a Year 5 Class 2 pupil at Letong Campus of Tonghui Primary School in Huanggu District, a member of the school’s Young Pioneers committee, and also part of the Liaoning Red Cross Society’s emergency first-aid education team. She has taken part in four training sessions with the Red Cross, covering CPR, airway obstruction and other first-aid skills, and has frequently given public demonstrations at major events such as the launch of the education team.
