Locals sifted through the charred remains of their homes after a massive fire tore through a slum area in Manila.

Footage shows residents trying to salvage what they could from the still-smoking ruins of Happyland in the Tondo district of the capital on September 14.

An inferno broke out in the residential area on Saturday evening, destroying hundreds of wooden shacks.

The Bureau of Fire Protection-National Capital Region said some 1,000 individuals were affected and 1.5 million PHP (19,307 GBP) of property was damaged.

The Manila Department of Social Welfare has set up temporary shelters for the families left homeless by the fire.

It comes just a month after flames tore through the same neighbourhood, displacing some 700 families.

Manila's Tondo district is among the most densely populated urban areas of the world, marked by poverty, informal settlements, and high crime rates. The overcrowded squatter settlements are filled with hovels made of wood and corrugated metal, exacerbating fire risks.

Of the slums in the district, Happyland - a filthy residential area of around 12,000 people nestled in rubbish heaps - is considered the poorest. Its name is believed to have come from the Visayan word 'hapilan' which means garbage dump.
