A boy narrowly survived a horror python attack outside his home in Indonesia.

Mohammad Iqbal, 11, was fishing with friends when the 20ft beast emerged from the swamp next his family's house in Nagan Raya Regency, on January 5.

The youngster screamed as the snake pounced and sank its fangs into his left thigh. It then wrapped around his leg, trying to drag him into the murky water.

Mohammad's terrified friends raced back to the village before returning with several residents, who jumped into the swamp to help the struggling boy.

Brave villagers were said to have repeatedly bashed the reptile until it finally loosened its powerful grip.

Footage shows the locals hauling the motionless python back to the village for disposal.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Benny Bathara, Nagan Raya Police Chief, said police arrived at the scene after receiving a report.

He said: 'We ensured the victim received medical treatment after sustaining several injuries to his leg from the snake attack. The victim's condition is gradually improving, although he remains traumatised by the attack.'

Gruesome photos show the horrific wounds where the python had torn flesh around Iqbal's left knee. The dead snake was then dragged away and cremated.

Following the incident, police urged the public to remain vigilant when carrying out activities near swamps. The residential area in Suak Puntong Village is located close to plantations and rivers, increasing the risk of wildlife encounters, they said.

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to come into conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.
