Indian doctors remove 30 iron nails from 18-year-old patient's stomach
Doctors in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh extracted 30 iron nails as well as other metal objects from an 18-year-old patient's stomach.
The patient, identified as Karan from Bhatwa village in Unnao, was writhing in pain and had visited a private hospital for a checkup.
The doctors were left baffled after medical scans revealed what was inside the 18-year-old's stomach.
After a 2.5-hour-long operation, sharp-edged iron tools, 30 3-inch iron nails, a rough-edged tool, a 4-inch-long iron rod, four sewing machine needle threaders and a screwdriver were recovered from his stomach.
Dr Pawan Singh, Dr Ashish Puri and Dr Santosh Kumar, who conducted the surgery, managed to extract the foreign objects safely.
The patient's father said that Karan had mental health problems and had consumed the metal objects.
Dr. Radha Raman Awasthy said: "When we asked the patient, he was unable to tell us as to how he had consumed the metal tools.
"We are monitoring him as he has chances of developing sepsis, but he is recuperating well. The next seven days are crucial for his health and he has been placed under observation."
This footage was filmed on October 2.
