At least 15 homes toppled into the sea today (June 15) after severe coastal erosion on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Footage captured on the Amurang coast in South Minahasa regency showed the moment one house fell into the water shortly followed by a bridge.
According to a local official, there have so far been no reports of injuries as residents had time to evacuate their homes after hearing loud cracking noises.
He said 15 residents of the affected houses were being transferred to an emergency response post.
Abrasion occurred on the coast of Amurang, South Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi (North Sulawesi) on Wednesday (15/6) at around 14.00 WITA.
The disaster resulted in at least 15 residents' houses, bridges, the parking area of the inn building being damaged and collapsing into the sea. The beach abrasion did not cause any casualties or injuries.
A member of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of South Minahasa, Andre Lombogia, said that local residents had time to self-evacuate because the abrasion did not happen instantly. According to him, a number of witnesses from local residents had also heard a sound like a boom and a crack when the disaster occurred.
"Residents feel a vibration, suddenly abrasion starts from the coastal area to the area of residents' houses. On average they evacuate independently because he doesn't fall instantly, the abrasion is slowly gradual. The time from the beginning to the big one is about an hour," said Andre when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (15/6) night
Andre continued, 15 residents of the affected houses were currently being evacuated to the emergency response post. A number of residents living in coastal areas are also advised to be vigilant because it is feared that there will be further abrasion disasters.
Furthermore, the temporary BPBD rapid reaction team conducted a rapid assessment, while the South Minahasa Regency Government visited the scene. The incident report has also been submitted to the Head of BNPB, Governor of North Sulawesi, Irtama BNPB, Regent of South Minahasa, Head of BPBD Executive of North Sulawesi Province.
"We are still assessing the incident because we are afraid of further incidents. Because the command post is limited and small, 15 houses affected have fled, the rest have fled and some went to their relatives' houses," he said.
The video was recorded by a 30-year-old Sctv journalist Juandri when he was at the scene
