This is the dramatic moment a tourist was saved from a flash flood by an Indian takeaway cook.

Nerve-wracking footage shows the man in a saffron shirt being swept downhill by fast-moving floodwaters surging through a street in Ajmer, India.

He can be seen desperately trying to grab onto poles and the outstretched hands of vendors as he is carried along by the raging current on July 18.

Moments later, the soaking-wet holidaymaker managed to clutch the hand of one of the sellers with all his strength.

A second rescuer then grabbed the back of his shirt and hauled the dazed tourist out of the water and into the safety of the eatery.

The man reportedly did not sustain any injuries from what happened.

Local media said the flood also destroyed a family's house after they were safely evacuated.

Officials reported that the state has experienced 126 per cent more rainfall than average since the start of the monsoon season on June 1.
