MECHANICSBURG, Ohio — Two horses were rescued after falling through the ice on a pond during below-freezing conditions Dec. 13, thanks to a coordinated, multi-agency response captured on body-worn camera footage, authorities said.

At approximately 8:57 p.m., officers with the Mechanicsburg Police Department responded alongside the Mechanicsburg Fire Department and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office after receiving reports that two horses had broken through ice and were submerged up to their necks.

Despite a Level 2 snow emergency and hazardous conditions, first responders worked collaboratively, with fire personnel leading rescue operations. After extensive efforts and careful coordination, both horses were successfully pulled from the icy water without further incident.

Officials credited teamwork, determination and assistance from community members for the successful outcome, noting the rescue demonstrated a shared commitment to protecting life, even in dangerous winter conditions.
