A speedy giraffe made the most of its long legs to outsprint a hunting lioness, barely escaping its attack.

Moses Sheehama was leading a tour through Hoanib Skeleton Camp, Namibia, when he spotted a lion known as Charly, stalking a group of the tall animals.

Dramatic footage shows the seven-year-old predator run at full speed after one of the youngest members of the herd, causing it to turn tail.

Thanks to its long legs, the giraffe managed to kick on and escape through the sand with its back hooves mere feet from the charging Charly.

Moses, 35, said: “This was a real ‘wow’ moment for me. I knew it was going to happen but it still didn’t make it any less special.

“I’ve been a field guide at Hoanib for a long time and never seen anything like this before.

“We saw Charly stalking the giraffes and watched for 40 minutes before she made her attempt.

“The giraffe certainly made the most of her long legs and showed a real burst of speed to escape.

“Charly gave up hunting that one animal straight after the attack and moved on to trying to find a meal elsewhere.”
