Chinese supermarket owner performs Heimlich maneuver to rescue child choking on candy
A supermarket owner performed Heimlich maneuver to rescue a child choking on a candy in central China.
The video was filmed in Xuchang City in Henan Province on May 3.
Mr. Wang, the supermarket owner, described the scene, noting the boy, approximately 10 years old, arrived at the store on his bicycle that afternoon. He abandoned his bike by the roadside and dashed into the shop, tossing a banknote towards the cashier before grabbing a bottle of water to drink.
"He turned to look at me, his face flushed, struggling to breathe. He hadn't managed to drink any water, and that's when I realised something was wrong," Wang recalled.
Sensing the boy might be choking on something, Wang swiftly applied the Heimlich maneuver. Stepping out from behind the counter, he wrapped his arms around the boy's waist, formed a fist with one hand, placing it between the navel and the ribcage, while the other hand pressed firmly on top of the fist. He then delivered quick, upward thrusts.
After repeating the motion for about 10 seconds, the boy expelled the candy. Wang mentioned that the child stayed in the store for a while to recover before leaving once assured of his well-being.
Wang further disclosed that the child's parents were working out of town. Later, the boy's grandparents visited the store to express their gratitude towards him.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
