Mount Ibu in West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku has risen from level Iii (alert) to level IV (caution). The mountain erupted again today, Friday 17 May 2024, and spewed a column of volcanic ash as high as approximately 5 kilometers above sea level.

The impact of the eruption resulted in volcanic ash raining in a number of villages at the foot of Mount Ibu, and forced hundreds of residents to be evacuated.

It is known that approximately 500 residents have been evacuated from early Friday morning until now. These residents have been evacuated to safer places to avoid an even more devastating eruption due to the current status of Mount Ibu being raised to level four to alert.
