Just hours after a tragic fentanyl overdose claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman in Ormond Beach, Florida, Volusia Sheriff’s Office detectives had the suspected dealer in custody. The swift arrest highlights the relentless work of the VSO Overdose Task Force in combatting the opioid crisis.

Trevin D. Smith, 32, was identified through messages on the victim’s phone, which revealed he had sold her fentanyl and was offering to sell more. Detectives arranged a meeting at a 7-Eleven, but when Smith arrived and spotted law enforcement, he tried to flee. After a short foot chase to a nearby gas station, he was apprehended. As he ran, Smith tossed both his phone and a baggie of fentanyl—both of which were recovered.

Smith was booked into jail on multiple charges, including sale and delivery of fentanyl, resisting arrest, using a two-way communication device to commit a felony, and child neglect—after detectives discovered his toddler unsecured in the backseat of his car. He is currently being held without bond as the overdose death investigation continues.
