Mount Marapi in West Sumatra will begin experiencing major eruptions throughout 2025.
Mount Marapi in West Sumatra experienced two eruptions in the near future. The height of the eruption reached 1,000 meters and 700 meters from the peak, which was accompanied by a loud boom on Saturday, 17 May 2025.
Plumes of smoke from the eruption were clearly visible from Padang Panjang City, Agam Regency in the eastern region, and Bukittinggi City.
In a report issued by the Marapi Volcano Observation Post (PGA) from the Volcanology Center for Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption occurred at 09.47 WIB and 09.54 WIB, with the intensity of ash observed to be thick and leaning towards the northeast and north.
The first eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 mm and a temporary duration of ± 51 seconds. Meanwhile, the second eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 mm and a duration of ± 1 minute 15 seconds.
At least as of Saturday, May 17, 2025, there have been 442 eruptions and 6,541 blow eruptions since the first major eruption occurred on December 3, 2023.
Previously, on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, a large eruption also occurred at Volcano in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province.
The eruption occurred at 09.42 WIB, with the ash column reaching 1,600 meters above the mountain peak. Where the ash column was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity leaning towards the northeast. This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and a duration of around 1 minute 2 seconds.
Where on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, it was the largest eruption that occurred throughout 2025.
