Mount Marapi on the Indonesian island of Sumatra erupted six times on Saturday (January 7), sending a gigantic column of ash around 300 metres into the sky.

Filmer Arief Munda, a resident living in Bukittinggi city near the volcano, said the eruption at the top of the mountain was visible from a distance. "I haven't seen Mount Marapi erupt in a long time, and saw it this morning while on my way to town," Munda said.

The Marapi volcano monitoring officer told Newsflare that the first eruption occurred at 06:11 local time with an eruption height of 300 metres from the crater at the top of the mountain.

"Until Saturday afternoon there had been six eruptions, with a height of 200 to 300 metres.” It is the first time in five years it has erupted, he said.

Emergency officials said that no one has been injured so far.

These images were captured at Bukittinggi, West Sumatra Province on Saturday.

Editor’s note: This eruption concerns Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, not Merapi in East Java.
