A stray dog stuck under an abandoned well was rescued by heroic residents.

The pooch was heard crying by a group of youngsters who visited a rubber plantation in Bueng Kan province on January 28.

It was later found in the 8ft-deep empty hole and was freed with the help of locals.

Footage shows the good Samaritans lowering an old net and a bamboo pole to reach for the creature. They had some difficulty luring the pooch to jump inside but it was eventually saved.

One of the dog's rescuers Tung May said: ‘We heard a dog barking but we couldn't find it. We searched the area until we saw it under the hole.'

The weak pooch was carried out of the whole. It was fed and ran away.

Tung added: ‘They said the well was normally covered with an iron sheet and wood but it was windy so it might have been blown away.'

The pooch was unhurt and given water and food.
