An elephant herd came together to help a calf escape a slippery watering hole in Kruger National Park.

Footage captured on March 20 shows adult elephants using their trunks and feet to help the struggling calf out of the water.

The filmer told Newsflare: "While on safari in the Kruger National Park, we came across a herd of elephants, all gathered around one of the many manmade watering holes spread across the park.

"These watering holes are created to provide water to animals during the dry periods of the year when all other natural sources have dried up. There were a lot of elephants gathered around the small concrete watering hole.

"When some of the elephants started moving away, we suddenly realised there was a baby elephant right in the middle of the elephants, inside the watering hole. It looked like the baby elephant was in the watering hole to enjoy a swim while the adults were drinking.

"Things became a little tricky for the youngster when it was time to get out. The inside of the concrete watering hole was clearly smooth and very slippery, and the baby elephant really started struggling to get out.

"The baby elephant was slipping and sliding, quickly stirring a panic situation amongst the rest of the elephant herd. It was incredible to see how the majority of the elephant herd quickly came rushing back to rescue the little elephant.

"There was a lot of trumpeting and screaming, signalling a stressful situation for the elephants. Some adult elephants used their trunks and others used their feet and before we knew it, the team effort paid off and the baby elephant managed to get out in no time.

"What seemed like a tense and stressful situation, quickly turned out to be a heart-warming moment, showing the incredible love and care that exists among elephants and the benefits of staying together as one family unit."
