Landslide crashes into homes and cars amid heavy rain in Malaysia
This is the dramatic moment a landslide crashes into homes and cars during heavy rain in Malaysia.
The monsoon downpours and wind loosened the earth before it plunged down the hillside near Expressway 6 (Jalan E6) in Ampang Jaya at Selangor state, on October 15.
Authorities ordered more than 300 residents to evacuate immediately. Residents were directed to temporarily relocate to the multipurpose hall in Taman Melawati.
They said that heavy rainfall has also caused several trees to fall in the vicinity, damaging homes and vehicles.
Ahmad Mukhlis, assistant director of Operations at the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, said that he received reports of the landslide at 11.42 am.
A team of six staff and officers from the Ampang Fire and Rescue Station visisted the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered a landslide affecting an area of 66 by 66 feet (20x20 metres) with a height of 98 feet (30 metres).
There were no reported injuries or damage to homes.
After the incident, Minister of Works Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that a blocked drainage system caused the landslide.
He directed the slope engineering branch of the Public Works Department to conduct a detailed assessment of the situation.
The officials also reported that four houses and one car were impacted by the soil movement, with no casualties.
Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail stated that the Mineral and Geoscience Department is also assessing whether the area is safe.
The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council and Gombak District Land Office are carrying out cleanup work in the affected area.
Police personnel have been deployed to monitor the residential area during the operation.
