Philippine Red Cross volunteers rescued residents from floods.

More than 143 volunteers and staff were dispatched to evacuate locals from the flood-stricken city of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, the Philippines, on February 11.

Footage shows rescuers clad in helmets and life vests assisting residents and their pets onto boats to escape the waist-high deluge.

Authorities said more than 1,000 families in the island province were displaced by floods triggered by record rains this week.

Provincial disaster management office chief Jeremias Alili said at least five people had died.

The local council has declared a state of calamity in the region, allowing the government to quickly disburse funds for disaster response operations.

Officials said they were still assessing damage to fisheries and farmlands in the province.

State weather bureau PAGASA announced that the flooding was caused by the northeast monsoon and the shear line—the intersection of cold monsoon winds with warm air from the easterlies.

The provincial disaster management office reported that more than 2,000 people had been taken to evacuation centres as the inclement weather was expected to last until Wednesday, February 12.
