A stray cat was rescued from a river using a basket tied to a rope.

The feline climbed onto rocks at the bottom edge of a concrete wall to escape the rising water when it was spotted by kind workers in Selangor, Malaysia.

Footage shows the white and orange tabby crying as a red container tied to a string was lowered toward it.

The Good Samaritans tried to coax it into the container, but the scared moggy refused to move from the safety of the rocks.

As the frightened kitten would not climb into the plastic basket, one of the men volunteered to wade through the dirty water to rescue the animal.

Employee Muhamad Nur Kamazan said: ‘I was with my colleagues Yus and Zema to pick up a package at the back of our shop.

‘The cat is a stray. Someone told us it was stuck in the canal. We looked for materials we could use to save it.'

The rescuer stepped into the water, gently picked up the furry animal and placed it inside the container.

Muhamad and his friends then pulled it up to safety.

The stray was uninjured and was fed by the kind workers who saved it on July 30.
