LUFKIN, Texas — Lufkin Police Officer Christian Ibarra was honored this week for his life-saving actions after rescuing a woman attempting to jump from an overpass.

During the Aug. 5 Lufkin City Council meeting, Police Chief David Thomas awarded Ibarra the Meritorious Service Medal. Mayor Mark Hicks also presented a certificate of recognition for the officer’s bravery and quick response.

The incident occurred when Ibarra responded to a report of a person on the east Loop overpass at Ford Chapel Road. Upon arrival, he found a woman standing against the barrier. When she saw his vehicle, she straddled the wall and attempted to jump. Ibarra rushed to her and pulled her to safety.

“Helping this woman in a time of crisis was part of Christian’s normal workday,” Thomas said. “After ensuring she received care at a local healthcare facility, he returned to patrol.”

Thomas praised the professionalism and courage of Ibarra and his fellow officers. “They are unsung heroes,” he said. “As a community, we must recognize the work they do daily to keep us safe.”
