STORY COUNTY, Iowa — A patrol stop on Highway 69 turned into a three-vehicle collision November 8 after a driver crossed into oncoming traffic and failed to pull over for law enforcement, according to the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Schroeder spotted the vehicle south of Story City driving erratically and drifting over the center line. When he activated his emergency lights and sirens, the driver refused to stop, leading to a head-on crash that left three vehicles heavily damaged.

Despite the severity of the collision, no major injuries were reported.

The driver was arrested on charges of first-offense OWI, driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Authorities emphasized that the crash was entirely preventable.

The sheriff’s office urged motorists to make responsible choices and avoid driving impaired, noting that safe decisions protect everyone on the roadway.

A criminal charge is an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
