SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — A loose horse wandering through a neighborhood led to an unusual — and ultimately heartwarming — call for a Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy.

A few weeks ago, Deputy Soule responded to reports of a roaming horse and found the animal calm and curious. As he attempted to place a halter on it, he accidentally gave the horse “a little bop on the nose,” the sheriff’s office said. The horse was not amused.

What followed was 20 minutes of patient coaxing, slow laps around a yard, and plenty of gentle “horse whispering.” With a combination of calm persistence and a carrot at just the right moment, the horse eventually warmed back up to the deputy.

The animal was safely returned home without injury.
