PALATKA, Fla. — Deputies and firefighters rescued a man Sunday after he jumped from Memorial Bridge into the St. Johns River, officials said.

Sgt. Drummond responded to the scene moments before the man leapt from the bridge railing. Remarkably, he survived the fall and began treading water but refused to exit, fearing arrest. Several boats attempted to assist before Palatka Fire Department launched its vessel.

After reassurance from Sgt. Drummond and firefighters, the man agreed to board the boat and was safely brought to shore. Putnam County Fire Rescue paramedics evaluated him and transported him to a hospital for further care.

The sheriff’s office thanked Palatka Fire Department, Palatka Police Department and Putnam County Fire Rescue for their teamwork. Officials encouraged those in crisis to call 988, the National Suicide Hotline, for support.
